Convocation season at MUN fills up fast. If you're planning a grad photoshoot, here's everything you need to know before you book.
Cap and Gown:
MUN provides a standard black cap and gown, but if you want the full academic dress — including the hood colour specific to your faculty
— the MUN Bookstore rents academic dress for photographs. Confirm availability for your preferred date before booking your session.
When to Book
Dates fill up quickly — especially in spring and fall convocation seasons. Weekday mornings and evenings tend to have more availability, and the light is better anyway. Once you've confirmed your gown rental date, reach out and we'll lock in a time.
Where to Shoot
On campus, the Core Science Facility and the INCO Innovation Centre photograph well — clean architecture, good light. If you want something less expected, Quidi Vidi Village and downtown St. John's give you a completely different feel. Most sessions work well with two locations.
What to Wear
Underneath the gown, wear something you'd be comfortable in for photos on its own — you'll likely want shots both with and without the gown. Solid colours work better than patterns. If you're shooting outdoors, bring an extra pair of shoes for walking.
Weather
Newfoundland weather is unpredictable, but it's rarely a dealbreaker. Overcast skies photograph well. Light rain or mist can actually create something more interesting than flat noon sun. We'll have a backup plan either way.
Pricing
Express session — $150 (tax included)
Bringing friends? Group sessions are discounted — cheaper for everyone, and you'll have photos together to remember the day. Not a bad deal.
