Engagement Session in St. John's: What to Expect and Why It's Worth It
A wedding in Newfoundland is a big day. And it moves fast. By the time the ceremony starts, most couples have been awake for hours, running on adrenaline, surrounded by people who all need something from them. The camera is just one more thing in the room.
That's why I always recommend doing an engagement session first.
What it actually does
Most people have never been photographed professionally. The first time a camera points at you, something happens — you stiffen, you smile too hard, you don't know what to do with your hands. That's completely normal.
An engagement session in St. John's is where that goes away.
Not because I give you a list of poses. But because by the end of an hour of walking around together, you've figured out something important: the camera is there, but you don't actually have to think about it. That realisation is worth a lot on your wedding day in Newfoundland, when there's no time to figure it out.
What we actually do
We walk. That's most of it.
Walking is one of the most natural things people do. Something happens when you walk — the face relaxes, the shoulders drop, the conversation finds its own rhythm. We'll talk about what you're having for dinner. Whether you want to stop for coffee tomorrow. Nothing important. That's the point.
I'll be there, paying attention. The photographs come from in between those moments — not from stopping and posing, but from what happens when you're just talking to each other.
What you'll use the photos for
Photos for your wedding invitation. Something to display at the reception. A record of who you were before the wedding, not just on the day itself.
And more than anything — a sense of how this works. So that when your wedding day comes, you already know what to do. Or more accurately, you already know that you don't have to do anything.
What to wear
Comfortable, but not hiking gear. Think a step above your everyday — something with a bit of intention to it. Soft colours work well: pastels, muted tones, neutrals. Coordinate with each other loosely — you don't need to match, just not clash. Nothing too busy or too bright.
The most important thing nobody thinks about: shoes. We're going to walk, and St. John's terrain is uneven. Wear something comfortable for most of the session. If there's a moment where the shoes matter in the frame, we can switch for that. But for most of it, your feet will thank you — and so will your face.
When to book
Ideally a few months before your wedding — enough time that the photos can be used for invitations if you want them, and close enough to the wedding that you're still getting to know each other in front of the camera. Summer and early fall are the best seasons in Newfoundland for outdoor sessions, but indoor sessions work year-round.
Engagement sessions are available as a standalone booking or as an add-on to a wedding package.
