A photographer's guide to indoor spaces that actually work — for windy days, rainy days, and everything in between.
Newfoundland weather moves fast. A morning that starts clear can turn foggy by noon, and wind at Signal Hill can hit 80 km/h without much warning. Indoor locations aren't a backup plan — they're part of how a wedding day here gets photographed well.
These are the spaces I come back to most often, and what each one gives you.
Hotels
Alt Hotel is modern and minimalist — clean lines, large windows, neutral tones. Everything photographs clearly here without competing with the couple.

Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland has more classical bones — staircases, long hallways, window corners. Good for formal portraits and larger bridal party shots.

JAG Hotel is the most distinctive of the three — bold colours, contemporary design, full of personality. Better suited to couples who want something editorial and unexpected.

The Rooms
The best indoor location in St. John's, full stop. Massive windows, high ceilings, neutral surfaces, and architectural lines that create clean, well-lit portraits in any season. The light here is some of the best you'll find indoors anywhere in the city.
Some sessions may require advance permission depending on the day and time — worth calling ahead.

Quidi Vidi Brewery
Rustic wood, warm light, intimate atmosphere. One of the most genuinely Newfoundland indoor spaces available. Works well as a quick stop between outdoor locations when the weather shifts — and the photos from inside are often some of the best of the day.

Bannerman Brewing Co.
Industrial-chic interior with large windows and clean, modern design. Good natural light, good space, and a relaxed atmosphere that tends to bring out candid moments.

Government House
Formal, elegant, and architecturally distinctive. White columns, high ceilings, classic details. Works well for couples who want something more traditional and refined. Contact in advance to confirm availability.
University & Public Buildings
MUN campus buildings, the Convention Centre, City Hall lobby — wide hallways, modern architecture, and consistent window light. Useful as transition spots when weather shifts mid-session, and often underused as actual portrait locations.
Outdoor vs. Indoor — When to Switch
Strong gusts over 50 km/h make Signal Hill and Cape Spear difficult. Heavy rain changes what's possible outside. Winter limits most outdoor locations entirely.
The good news is that switching doesn't have to mean settling. The spaces above photograph as well as most outdoor locations — just differently. Outdoor gives you drama. Indoor gives you control. A well-planned day uses both.
